•Overview of the National Kaohsiung Marine University
Taiwan is surrounded by sea on four sides. The sea has given birth to abundant diverse cultures. The sea has also given important resources for the survival of humankind. “Creating a nation from the ocean” is one of the government's policy goals. The announcement of the Ocean Policy White Paper and the National Oceans Policy Guidelines and the enactment of the White Paper on Marine Education underscore the growing importance of and the attention being paid to marine education. Among the higher educational institutions in Taiwan, National Kaohsiung Marine University is the only one with the sea as an educational focus cultivating marine affairs professionals. In the decades since its establishment, the University has trained numerous outstanding marine professionals who have made significant contributions to the economic development of our nation. With this as a foundation, the University will aggressively promote international academic and technical exchanges, lead Taiwan's marine-related industries in the pursuit of technification and sophistication, and create a bright future for our country's marine industries.

•Historical Development
In order to increase the economic and trade development of southern Taiwan, the government established the Kaohsiung branch of the Provincial Keelung Marine and Fishery Senior Vocational school in 1946. Two years later, the Kaohsiung branch became the independent Kaohsiung Marine and Fishery Senior Vocational School. In a very short time, the School became the driving force behind the development of marine-related industries in southern Taiwan. With the rapid economic and trade development of the nation and the increasing demand for marine professionals, the School was elevated to the status of junior college in 1967. Graduates from two-year programs were competitively sought-after. In 1997, the government elevated the College's status to institute of technology allowing it to provide opportunities for advance study to vocational school graduates. At the same time, the school started to recruit university students. As graduates entered the workplace, the marine industries received a fresh burst of energy.
In 2004, the university was renamed National Kaohsiung Marine University. At present, the University has 14 departments and 11 graduate institutes. The academic disciplines of management, hydrosphere, marine engineering and marine affairs are covered by four colleges and a Commission of General Education. The Total number of students is 8000.

•Mission of the University and Developmental Goals
Since its establishment, the university has used loyalty, trustworthiness, industriousness and bravery as its spiritual standards and educational goals. It seeks to cultivate students who have the qualities of being proactive, honest, diligent and responsible. Entrusted with the enduring mission of education, the University strives tirelessly to fulfill it by creating an exceptional learning environment to continue cultivating our country's marine affairs professionals.

•Integration of Humanities and Technology in Shaping Well-rounded People with Caring and Love Towards Society and the Sea:
With an emphasis on both humanities and technology, the University leads its students in approaching, understanding, utilizing, and protecting the sea. It cultivates appreciation for humanities and teaches knowledge of general culture. It develops moral character and concepts of lawful behaviors and encourages student organization activities and community service. It hopes to shape young adults with strong convictions, wholesome character, and a spirit for social service like the sea that is open, accepting and caring. These healthy, honest, well-rounded people possessing integrity and skill will be ready to pursue a happy life.

•Professional Education Integrated into Industry Focusing on both Practice and Theory:
The University had firmly established itself academically and prominently displayed its special features. It invites and brings together alumni and experts from related industries, government and academia to review and revise as a group the content of courses. Due to the changes and needs of society and industry in our country and abroad, the University has strengthened students’ internship and laboratory courses and off-campus internship training. It fully integrates into related industries with which it plans the last mile of students to make a smooth transition into the workforce and fully realizing the educational result of getting students ready for the workforce upon graduation.

•Dual Focus on Teaching and Research Emphasizing Innovative Research and Industry-Academic Collaboration:
The teaching focuses on practical application and the research seeks innovation. Through cross-disciplinary technological integration, students will strengthen their problem-solving abilities. Through technological research and development, all kind of research results and technical know-how can be converted into actual production techniques valuable to business and industry, strengthening the industry's international competitiveness. The marine affairs industry has grown exponentially in southern Taiwan. The University is in a uniquely favorable position. Using the University's facilities and human resources and through training sessions and collaborative projects, the University closely integrates with the marine-related industries by giving full play to the Center of Marine Industry Technology, the Innovation and Incubation Center and the Merchantman Seafarer Training Center. The National Kaohsiung Marine University is indeed the best collaboration partner for the marine industry in southern Taiwan.

•Caring about Every Student and Cultivating Talent with Job Market Competitiveness:
The National Kaohsiung Marine University is part of the vocational professional educational system. Most students are graduates of vocational schools in marine affaires, agriculture, and industry. The university cares about every student. It offers remediation in the courses for those who do not have sufficient preparation. Then, it makes reasonable adjustments to course content, increases course credits, internship or laboratory hours. The University teaches practical skills raising every young person to meet the expectations of the workplace and be competitive upon graduation.

•Integrating Resources and Strengthening Industry Competitiveness:
To effectively integrate human talent and hardware and software resources, cross-disciplinary organizations are the best research and service groups that can help industry increase their research and development capabilities. Using the university's faculty, library, and facilities, the University offers continuing education for professionals and a channel for life-long learning and research for alumni. It offers students internship and employment opportunities. It uses problems in the field as topics for student projects or these integrating its research capabilities with industry's demands and turning graduates into the high level technical personnel that the industry needs.

•Creating an International Learning Environment and Promoting the Goal of Globalization:
Globalization and internationalization is a definite trend in the future world. Cultivating students who are grounded in Taiwan but have the qualities of global citizens is an important mission of universities. The National Kaohsiung Marine University has aggressively sought to create an international learning environment. To raise the students’ foreign language abilities, it has created an English Learning Center. For students with weaker English skills, guidelines for improving English language teaching are established, exceptional foreign language teachers are recruited and tutoring is offered after scheduled classes. All this is done to implement the educational policy of raising students’ foreign language abilities.
In recent years, the University has continuously conducted reciprocal academic exchanges. At the moment, it has academic collaboration and agreements with marine affairs universities of over 30 universities from the United States, Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Panama, Vietnam, and Mainland China. With some of these institutions, the University exchanges students hoping to broaden through actual exchanges through the international viewpoint of faculty and students, to initiate the University's globalizing goal and to develop an expansive overseas space for our country's marine affairs education.

•Creating a Harmonious, Professional, and Social Campus Culture:
To train students with the ability to perceive and act comprehensively, the University integrates classroom instruction, topical lectures, quality learning environments, diverse extra-curricular activities into its curriculum design and implementation. It hopes to teach students to be open-minded, to appreciate the talents and accomplishments of their peers and to care about each other. The University seeks to cultivate international mariners with professional skills, broad perspectives and rich cultural understandings to serve society and humanity. It also continues to promote greeenification of the campus by conserving energy, protecting the environment, organizing clean-up activities, reducing its carbon footprints, reducing waste, and cherishing the earth.
The University has refined etiquette and service learning courses, strengthened moral and lawful life education, promoted community service, and encouraged students to step outside the campus to care for the environment at large to teach students communication skills and instill the spirit of caring for others. The University organizes cultural, thanksgiving, caring for the disadvantaged and ecological experience activities to shape students into well-rounded people who care for people and their surroundings. In addition, the University encourages professors to open their laboratories to allow students to participate in industry-academia collaborations and research projects. Through the professors' words, actions and the setting, students' learning can be more sophisticated. Students still develop the life attitude of pursuing truth, goodness and beauty, and seek to excel. They will also establish the bright aim of learning throughout their lives, treating their professions with respect, and continuously building their chosen careers.

•Allowing the Sea to Lead us to the 21st Century New Age of Marine Technology:
The National Kaohsiung Marine University is the only technical university with the sea as its focus. In recent years, it has devoted all its resources to raising the quality of the faculty, improving the teaching and research environment, aggressively renewing equipment and raising the overall educational quality. It is already an academically and technically first-rate institution of higher learning. Our country is an island nation. The marine industry has great market potential. The 21st Century is the era of the global village. At this key moment of global transformation, the sea is calling us. We should be bravely embracing it and allowing it to lead us to the 21st Century new age of marine technology.
